If you, like me, need to be paying attention to where even the pennies go, you may find this recipe of use. Not only is it way less expensive litre for litre than a commercial brand of glass cleaner like Windex®, but I find it does a vastly superior job.

To one litre of water, add

In Murrican, to one quart of water, add

  • 1/8 cup sudsy ammonia
  • 1/2 cup of isopropyl alcohol
  • 1 tiny squirt (about 1/2 a tsp.) of dishwashing detergent.

These ingredients may be purchased at any grocery store, and the proportions shown above are not critical to the millilitre. Place this cleaner in a squirt bottle and use it in the same manner as you'd use any other spray window cleaner. It also stores well, so you can make up three or four litres and use it as you need it. You will find that you need only about half as much of this cleaner as you would of a commercial formulation. It's not called Hot Damn for nothing.
