We match words that rhyme
at the end of each line
and don't worry about there being
any sort of meaning
in the words we write,
no matter how contrite,
knowing some fool
will consider it cool
or call it profound
while it gains renown,
never knowing how quickly
we wrote it all down.

First, we must examine what is a robot. According to one reputable website, the answer is "A mechanical device that is capable of performing a variety of tasks on command or according to instructions programmed in advance." A bit vague and lacking the noun-verb structure we all know and love; could this be how robots write poetry?

Further on, after being instructed to write "Robot on the board", it is explained that: "Engineers design robots to perform complex tasks more easily and with greater accuracy." So, it appears to me that robots are now telling us what to write, but giving some credit to "engineers", while simultaneously adding an adjective, throwing out the programmers and tooting their own horns about ease and accuracy of tasks. Nowhere do they mention a morsel of gratitude for humans creating robots, or how robots write poetry.

However, we are given "everyday examples":

automatic car washes...seriously, who doesn't enjoy washing and waxing their cars with a garden hose and a chamois on a fine spring day in their own driveway?

vending machines...in the old days, cigarettes and other adult items; nowadays overpriced soda and Red Bull cans

automatic doors...grocery stores and hospitals come to my mind

robotic arms used in manufacturing...vague and slightly creepy if you're a visual thinker

remote control cars and trucks...as this information is intended as a lesson plan for grades 3-5, most will somewhat understand

automatic teller machines (ATMs)...sorry kids, no lollipops for you, no doggie treats for your pet

What is lacking is how robots go to war, how robots make mistakes, how much we, as a species, depend upon robots for safety in our homes and automobiles, our telephones, our computers, our television, our banking; the list is endless.

So if robots have spare time, when they're not "down" or "glitching" or "in sleep mode"; I say, "Bring it on, you robot poets!" Who cares how robots write poetry?
