Amongst other things,
King's College London, the second largest school within the
University of London. Founded by
Royal Charter in
1829 with the active patronage of
King George IV and the
Duke of Wellington, the college came into being at the pinnacle of the
Georgian neo-Classical period.
This ambition for a seat of "pure" learning meant that the college rapidly developed a name for itself as a serious academic institution, proving particularly fruitful for those pursuing qualifications in the fast-developing fields of medicine and engineering. Famous 19th Century alumni include Sir Charles Wheatstone, James Clerk Maxwell and Lord Lister.
It is now a multi-faculty institution with some 16,200 students occupying a leading position in higher education in the UK and enjoying a worldwide reputation for teaching and research.
