This ambition for a seat of "pure" learning meant that the college rapidly developed a name for itself as a serious academic institution, proving particularly fruitful for those pursuing qualifications in the fast-developing fields of medicine and engineering. Famous 19th Century alumni include Sir Charles Wheatstone, James Clerk Maxwell and Lord Lister.

It is now a multi-faculty institution with some 16,200 students occupying a leading position in higher education in the UK and enjoying a worldwide reputation for teaching and research.
