Picturesque North Ontario town, in the Temiskaming region.

Embroiled in a messy debate with Toronto over proposed rail shipments of Toronto garbage to a landfill facility near the town. The local government and some residents of the town favour development of the landfill, situated in a former mine, while others believe it is an environmental catastrophe waiting to happen, despite several environmental reviews.

The politics of the "big city" dumping its waste on the little town has inflamed latent anti-Toronto tensions to alarming levels. For example, unhappy Kirkland Lake members have vowed to embarrass Toronto in any way possible, including meeting with The Pope (to sabotage a Catholic conference in Toronto) and Juan Antonio Samaranch (to try and sabotage the Toronto 2008 Olympics bid.)
