Λαιστρυγονες
After six days of being buffeted by Aeolus, the god of the winds, Odysseus arrived in the country of the Laestrygonians, giant cannibals who devoured foreigners. They inhabited a town which was said to have been founded by a character named Lamus. When Odysseus arrived, he brought his ships into a large and apparently safe harbour where he anchored. He landed and sent two of his men to explore the area. At the gate of a town they soon met a girl drawing water from a well. They asked who was the king. The girl took them to her home and called her father, Antiphates, who immediately killed one of the two sailors. Then he called all his compatriots to gather together. They dashed to the harbour and bombarded the ships with enormous rocks. All the ships were wrecked except the one which held Odysseus, who managed to escape. It may well be correct to identify the country of the Laestrygonians with Formiae in the south of Latium, on the Campanian boundary.
