A
songwriter duo; two of the Founding Fathers of
rock and roll. Jerry Leiber (words; from
Queens) and Mike Stoller (music; from
Baltimore), a pair of
L.A. blues-junkie hipsters who were part of the
50s nucleus at
Atlantic Records - but they had already cemented their legend as
rhythm and blues writers before signing up. They left Atlantic in the early
60s to run their own
indie label, cashing in at the tail end of the
girl group boom.
