A company offering
long-distance phone service to travellers, which
service lies somewhere between
false advertising and
fraud. Purportedly as a
convenience, this racket takes over the phone lines at hotels and condominiums and prevents even
local modem calls from being dialed until you give it a
credit card. Contrary to
FCC regulations, it does not list in any obvious place the rates at which it will charge that credit card -- $3.30 per call plus $.89/minute for long-distance calls. This despite interrupting the dialing sequence with a series of
tones that caused the modem to fail on about half its attempts. Needless to say, this is not "like home," where calls average $.05/minute.
If you see this "service" advertised on a hotel or condo phone, run away fast (and complain to the FCC).
