Maamme

Maamme (Our Land) is the Finnish national anthem.

Johan Ludvig Runeberg wrote the original lyrics in Swedish (why? well, that was the language the high-brow people mostly used at the time - the importance of Finnish was not realized until Kalevala came about =)

The poem - Vårt Land - is the opening poem of the Runeberg's ballads about War of Finland (1808-1809) titled Fänrik Ståls sägner (Vänrikki Stålin Tarinat, The Tales of Ensign Stål).

Sweden lost the war, and had to give Finland to Russia. Finland became an autonomic region. During this time, patriotic feelings and idea that Finland should be completely independent started to surface among Finns - this epic among the shiniest examples.

The song was written by Fredrik Pacius, a German-born composer.

The song was first performed in May 13, 1848, in Kumtähti Manor, Helsinki.
