A
fixed income instrument is essentially a
loan between an
investor and the entity that issued the
debt. The
issuer could be either a
government, a
corporation a
municipality or perhaps even a
private individual.
The investor purchases the instrument - a
bond,
bill or
note - which has a finite lifetime. The date when the legal obligation between the issuer and purchaser ceases to exist is known as the maturity date.
