Eduard Schnitzer

German explorer of Africa and colonial administrator. Born 1840, died 1892.

As a young man, Schnitzer travelled to the Ottoman province of Albania, where he adopted a Turkish lifestyle and changed his name to Mehmed Emin. He received the Ottoman title of pasha in 1887.

In 1878, he was appointed provincial governor of Southern Sudan by the British. Because of the turmoil of the Mahdi Rebellion, the province was isolated in 1885, and Emin Pasha's forces were (in 1888-1889) relieved by a force led by H.M. Stanley, much to Emin Pasha's regret.

In 1892, Emin Pasha was killed by Arab slave traders in the Belgian Congo.
