Miyako is a Japanese word meaning "metropolis" or "capital." Depending on which character is used, the word can be used as a shorthand for either Kyoto or Tokyo.

"Miyako" is also a Japanese given name for females. Famous Miyako's include actress Miyako Chocho and enka singer Miyako Harumi. There are 25 known ways to write the name "Miyako" using Japanese Kanji, each with its own meaning:
