Narcissus was a young man who was so beautiful that he turned every woman down. A forest
nymph named
Echo fell in love with him and he cruelly denied her. In
tears, she ran to
Aphrodite, the
goddess of love.
the goddess, so angered by someone denying her gift of love, she wished for Narcissus to fall in love with the next creature he laid his eyes on.
Being as beautiful as he was, he spent most of his time staring in the lake, looking at his reflection. And that is what he saw. He fell in love with the image of him self, and blinded by love threw him self into the lake. The goddess in that lake pitied him, and turned him into the flower called Narcissus. That still grows around forest lakes in Greece.
That is the version I read, but I am sure there are multiple variations to that story
