#1301-1625, 316 cars, r62, built by Kawasaki, 1984-86. 51 feet long. All units powered, but operate in trains of two 5-car sets.

#1651-2475, 824 cars, r62a, built by Bombardier, 1986-88. 51 feet long. All units powered. Sometimes run in trains of two 5-car sets, or in random order.

#2500-2924, 425 cars, r68, built by Westinghouse-Amrail, 1986-88. 75 feet long. All units powered, but usually operate in trains of two 4-car sets.

#3350-3649, 297 cars, r32, built by Budd, 1964. 60 feet long. Cars are operated in pairs, with motorman's cab on "A" end and conductor's cab on "B" end. Stainless steel fluting on entire carbody. Operates on A, C, E, F, and R.

#3650-3949, 297 cars, r32a, built by Budd, 1964. 60 feet long. Cars are operated in pairs. Operated in consists mixed with R-32's, there is no longer any mechanical difference between the cars. Stainless steel fluting on entire carbody. #3659 was renumbered 3348. #3669 was renumbered 3668.

#3950-4149, 196 cars, r38, built by St. Louis Car, 1966-67. 60 feet long. Cars are operated in pairs. Stainless steel fluting on lower half of carbody. Operates on A and C.

#4150-4449, 294 cars, r40, built by St. Louis Car, 1968-69. 60 feet long. Cars are operated in pairs. Has distinctive "shovel nose" on "A" end, and stainless steel fluting on lower half of carbody. Operates on L, N and Q.

#4450-4549, 100 cars, r40M, built by St. Louis Car, 1969. 60 feet long. Cars are operated in pairs. These cars were built without the shovel nose. Stainless steel fluting on lower half of carbody. Externally similar to R-42's, and operated in consists with them on the J, N, Q, and Z lines.

#4550-4949, 389 cars, r42, built by St. Louis Car, 1969-70. 60 feet long. Cars are operated in pairs. Stainless steel fluting on lower half of carbody. Operates on J, L, M, N, Q, and Z.

Usually operated in two 4-car sets of A-B-B-A units. Originally numbered #500-1227, 1228-1278 (even #s only). Operates on E, F, G, R, V, and Grand Street Shuttle.
