Nisqually is derived from French traders who called the South Puget Sound natives nez quarr, meaning "square nose," and altered by the native's inability to pronounce the letter "R." It is also the name of a Steel Electric class ferry, in the service of the Washington State Ferry System, which was built in San Francisco, California in 1927.
