Odynophagia, n. (from the Greek odyno- meaning 'pain' and -phagia, from phagein, meaning to eat)

Odynophagia refers to painful swallowing. Pain may occur in the mouth oropharynx, pharynx, or esophagus. While any sort of pain, including pain resulting from swallowing a sharp or hot object, may be considered odynophagia, it is most often used in the medical literature to refer to pain as a symptom of some more severe disease or disorder.
