It is
suspiciously mystical, as is a whole lot of
U2, goofus.
Actually, it really could come from a
very basic spiritual
concept that's been
upheld everywhere from
Egypt to
Catholicism--the
idea that the parts of you that you
bury or
condemn are the parts that will
save you. Originally, people would
kneel in prayer not as an act of
supplication, but to
acknowledge that the
lower things were the
key.
That, and kneeling brings you
closer to the
ground, not just
physically, but
spiritually. You don't
conform to that
lofty picture we call the
Tree of Life when you're
kneeling. You're
announcing that you will
reach the loftiest heights by
getting closer to the ground...it's that whole "
as above, so below" thing again.
