Short for Fender Precision Bass. It was the first electric bass, and was called a "precision" bass because it included frets, allowing notes to be more precise, as opposed to an acoustic bass that has no frets and requires excellent intonation from the player. P-Basses are known for a nice deep, although not necessarily versatile tone. They are very popular among rock bassists.
