Also called lager malt, Pilsner malt, as its name implies is used in the brewing of Pilsner style beers and other light lagers. It first arrived on the brewing scene around 1842, when the first golden colored beer was brewed in the town of Plzen, Czech Republic. It is one of the most popular malts in use today, as light-colored lagers dominate the beer market in Europe. It is also used in the production of high quality lagers in other countries such as the United States, Britain, and Australia. The color of Pilsner malt is about 2.5 EBC, making it the lightest malt available.
