An idea shared by percussionists, especially those who are in the drum line (battery section) of a marching band or drum corps, that you should aim for a point 2-3" below the actual head of the drum when you strike it. This idea conveys the intensity with which we play percussion instruments that are designed to have the living hell beaten out of them on the field. It sort of conveys one aspect of the Zone.
