The U.S. Department of Education
sponsors the Center for Civic Education
. The center's goal is to teach young people about the Constitution
, what it means, what our rights
are, and how to be a good citizen
They also do work in other countries, mostly educating teachers in emerging democracies. One such effort is in Nigeria. The center has a project running in Nigeria called Project Citizen. This program has students do community service, kind of a classical republican idea.
The students look over their community and find something that needs changed. Once a problem is found, they fix it. Very simple. The purpose is to have students looking out for the common good of the community so that their democracy doesn't fall into a sort of individual campaign.
