The Senepol is a
cross of two popular
cattle breeds, and follows in the contemporary tradition of combining
African (ex.
Ankole Watusi) or
Indian (ex.
Brahman)
cattle with
European stock to produce tougher, more adaptible
herds capable of producing high-
quality beef.
Only about one hundred years old, the Senepol were developed on the Carribean island of St. Croix by crossing Red Poll and N'Dama cattle. The resulting breed is insect and heat resistant, but yeilds tender meat, even in conditions where foraging is necessitated by sparse vegetation.
