Located in the Bulkley Valley, near Hudson Bay Mountain, Smithers (British Columbia, Canada) is a town of 15000 persons. It attracts numerous tourists with its diversity of recreational activities: fishing, fossil hunting, mountain climbing, skiing, and hiking. The economy is based on the region’s resources, fishing and the forest industry. There has been recent news that has reached national headlines over the closure of the mill Skeena Cellulose.

The town itself is 85% Anglophone, 10% First Nations and 5% Francophone. Many conservation and environmental associations are active in Smithers, in addition to non-governmental organizations in the same field.
