Play written by Christopher Fry detailing the events in the home of the mayor of a small village in England in the 16th or 17th century posed with two problems: a man who claims that he has committed murder, and demands to be hanged for it, and a woman who is accused of witchcraft, and doesn't want to be burned for it. Written in delightful blank verse, the play is an astonishing work, especially considering it was written in the 1940s.
