A science and engineering school located in Haifa. The MIT of Israel.

No one I know calls it 'Technion'. They all refer to it as 'The Technion'. This is because there is no such thing as an indefinite article in Hebrew.

The Technion is always prefixed by the definite article because it's not a technion (which could be interpreted as a place where technology is studied).

The Technion was the first academic institution in Israel to teach in Hebrew; before, it had been accepted that only something like German would do. This was a big victory for elements in the Zionist movement at the time. Today all academic institutions in Israel consider Hebrew their official language (but other languages, especially English, are generally acceptable for teaching, and almost universally used for research and publication).
