A gemstone (formerly called sphene) which is most commonly yellow, sometimes greenish or brown. It's sometimes confused with heliodor, yellow chrysoberyl, and yellow topaz. It is strongly pleochroic (shows different colors at different angles) and doubly refractive (all the light going into it is bent back at two different angles), making it an beautifully flashy-looking stone to wear. Unfortunately, its relative softness makes it not the greatest gem for jewelry.

Ti"tan*ite (?), n. [Cf. F. titanite; -- so called from containing titanic acid.] Min.

See Sphene.
