The Tri-Nations is southern hemisphere rugbys' premier tournament. It is contested between South Africa, New Zealand and Australia after the Super 12 competition has finished (usually around July/August). Each competing team plays four matches, one home game and one away game against each opponent, bonus points are earned by scoring more than 4 tries in one game, or losing by less than 7 points, with a maximum possible points per game of 5 points.

One of the games between New Zealand and Australia is designated as the Bledisloe Cup game (in the same way that in the Six Nations, the England and Scotland game is played for the Calcutta Cup). The Tri Nations was instituted in 1996 and is governed by SANZAR, a body containing representatives from the participating countries (the same board also governs the Super 12).
