Subsidary of Universal Studios founded in 1912 by Carl Laemmle, starting out producing low budget serials and many films of Erich Von Stroheim.

It survived on its characteristic low budget films like Frankenstein and Dracula until the 1960s when it reclaimed much success through the comedies of Doris Day and Rock Hudson. In the early 1970s it was bought by MCA, which made it the really really freaking big film packager we know today.
