Do not fear the counterspell. Play normally, otherwise you will cast far fewer spells than you should.

Be afraid, be very afraid.

The dread is almost palpable. It's your turn, you look at your opponent's board state, and all you see are ...
Untapped Islands in Magic: The Gathering can be quite scary to sit across from, both in terms of gameplay and strategy. Untapped Islands are open mana, which can be used for a variety of purposes, most of them nefarious (or at least conrolling). Your opponent might use it to cast a surprise creature, draw extra cards, or play an instant-speed removal spell. This unpredictability can make it nerve-wracking to make moves, as you never know what they might have in store. This is where you feel the cold, icy grip of futility and here's why: they strike fear (or at least loathing) into the hearts of many a Magic player. Indeed, upon their shores broken hearts lie victims of the game.
- Instant Speed Spells and Activated Abilities: Islands are synonymous with blue mana, which is known for its control tactics and capabilities. When an opponent has untapped Islands, it means they might have access to any (or all!) of the following: counter spells, bounce spells, forced discard or mill, clone spells or abilities, tutors, or other instants that can disrupt your plans or vastly advance their own with a Dramatic Reversal. This makes you second-guess your every move and tread carefully. Oh, the horror! The Hullbreaker Horror!
- Counter Spell Threat: Islands are often a key component of control decks. Control players love to keep mana open to threaten a counter spell like Counterspell, Negate, or Arcane Denial. It forces you to think twice before playing your most powerful spells, as they could be easily countered, leading to a feeling of uncertainty, uselessness, and tension even if it is An Offer You Can't Refuse.
- Blue Card Draw: Blue decks often rely on Islands to fuel card draw spells like Opt, Serum Visions, or Chemister's Insight. Knowing that your opponent might draw into more answers or threats with their untapped Islands can be anxiety-inducing. Rhystic Study does not help with this at all.
- Combo Shenanigans: Many combo decks also use blue mana to support their win conditions. When you see untapped Islands, you may be worried that your opponent is about to pull off a game-ending combo that you can't stop. When they can Dig Through Time to Solve The Equation or Muddle The Mixture, they can Preordain their own win. It's not just Propaganda that a Frantic Search for Thassa's Oracle may very well foretell your impending loss.
Whether Fact or Fiction, untapped Islands in Magic: The Gathering are associated with control, counterspells, card draw, and combo potential. These attributes make them a symbol of unpredictability and force you to be cautious and strategic in your plays, which can indeed be a scary prospect for many players, especially new players that Didn't Say Please. We are not even going to discuss Storm Crow. *shudder*
