Hydrogeology and Soil Science

The void ratio of a soil is the ratio of the volume of the voids to the volume of the solids. So if in a cubic meter of saturated soil there is 0.3m3 of water, then the void ratio is 0.3/0.7. E.g.

e = Vv/Vs

This is contrasted with the soil porosity, n, which is based on the volume of voids compared to the total volume. It is simple to convert:

e = n/(1-n)
