When You Were Little Did You Wonder

When you were little did you wonder

how your dad could take a blade of grass

and make it sound just like a whistle

or why a dog will chase a cat

and cats chase little furry things

as long as they’re not dogs

did you wonder when you were little

why the frosting on a Pop-tart

never melts inside the toaster

or if the stars fall from the sky at night

to make the front yard sparkle

in the morning

when you were little did you wonder

if the bugs you squish forgive you

or if the clouds were finger paintings

God made on the sky

like the ones you made in tempera paint

and taped up on the fridge

when you were little did you wonder

why vanilla’s white and chocolate’s brown

and why the summer has to end

and did they say when you were little

you just wait until you’re big.
