A
sociological term describing a
state of
poverty where the
lives of those affected are in
danger. This usually means no
access to
basic necessities like
food,
potable water, breathable
air,
shelter from elements, and basic
medical care.
This type of poverty is more common in countries where development is limited or the political climate isn't friendly to social services or lacks the resources to implement any sort of relief or support for the impoverished.
Obviously, there is a correlation between the percentage of a population in absolute poverty and the infant mortality rates, life expectancy, and other litmus tests for the quality of life in a given area.
