The arguably natural capitalistic tendency of the gradual dumbing-down and cost-reducing of a product in order to make it available to the general public; hence increasing the sales volume and profits. Originally the term was coined in the fashion industry as a way to describe making cheap goods to quite literally clothe, "the asses of the masses."
