When opposing armies agree to (at least temporarily) stop trying to put bullets in each other. Sometimes only lasts long enough to drag the wounded to hospitals and the dead into ditches. Once in a while allows enough spare minutes for surreal situations like football matches between English and German soldiers during WWI.
