In my senior year, my physics teacher informed me that a single piece of chalk possessed enough energy to send a full team of astronauts in a common shuttle to the moon and back. This is made possible if every single bond was broken. First the intermolecular bonds, then the intramolecular bonds must be broken. The most important source would come from the splitting of each atom into its component parts and perhaps even going so far as to convert the base particles themselves i.e., the protons, neutrons and electrons, into energy.
