The cockapoo is a
hybrid breed of dog resulting from a cross between a
cocker spaniel and a
poodle, and was first
developed in
America in the
1960s. In spite of its almost
dirty-sounding name, the cockapoo is known for having a
sweet disposition and being
friendly,
loyal,
affectionate, and
non-destructive, making it an excellent
family pet. Cockapoos are also
hypoallergenic, a trait
inherited from the poodle, which makes them ideal for people with fur or
dander allergies.
Cockapoos have exceptionally long life spans, living on average 18 to 22 years. They can range in size from under 6 pounds and about 8 1/2 inches tall to over 20 pounds and 17 inches.
Most cockapoos are first generation (the direct product of a poodle and a cocker spaniel), but many breeders are beginning to breed past the first generation in order to establish the breed and find a standard to which all cockapoos will be held. Cockapoos are not currently recognized by the American Kennel Club regardless of the pedigree line of the parents, but they can be registered by the Continental Kennel Club.
