A battery that is designed with thicker plates and more active material to withstand deep DOD (down to 50% capacity in the case of most lead-acid batteries), without experiencing damage. Compare to a starting battery which is only designed for a shallow DOD when starting an engine, and would be damaged quickly by deep cyclic use. Deep cycle batteries are commonly used in UPS systems, boats, RVs, golf carts, electric cars and emergency lighting.
