In geology, all
physical,
chemical and
biological processes that occur in a
sediment after
deposition, and before
metamorphism.
During this period, the sedimentary assemblages and their
interstitial pore fluids (any liquid which occupies the porous areas of the sediment) react and attempt to reach
equilibrium with their evolving geochemical
environment.
