A stage in which the cell has two separate haploid nuclei. The dikaryon is the result of plasmogamy without karyogamy (cytoplasmic fusion without nuclear fusion). The dikaryon is usually found only in fungi.

In certain genetic experiments involving yeast, the dikaryon is specially induced by cytoduction to study cytoplasmic inheritance as compared to nuclear inheritance.
