Related to kuji-in, this is the "folk magic" that Ninja and Samurai used back between the 12th and 17th centuries (or so). It involves drawing with ones finger the ideogram for the desired state on the desired recipient (so, the ideogram "health" over a wound) and then making a series of nine passes over it in a weave pattern. This was thought to create the desired change (or at least speed things up).
