A multi-city concert tour billed as a "celebration of women in music." Conceived by
Sarah McLachlan in 1997, Lilith Fair was a reaction to the preponderance of male-dominated concert tours such as
Lollapalooza, as well as to the
sexist attitudes of
concert promoters who were reluctant to put two women on the same bill. The tour has featured such prominent female artists as
Shawn Colvin,
Paula Cole, the
Indigo Girls,
Natalie Merchant,
Suzanne Vega,
Joan Osborne,
Jewel, and
Emmylou Harris, among others.
The Lilith Fair toured with great success for three years, 1997, 1998, and 1999. McLachlan decided to curtail them after that, having presumably proved her point.
