A general printing technique that uses a flat surface to hold the print image. This is in contrast to gravure, which uses a recessed surface, and letterpress (or relief printing), which uses a raised surface. The most common planographic printing technique is offset lithography, where the image part of the print surface is made ink-receptive and the blank part of the print surface is made ink-repellant.
