A condition where thrombus develops in the splenic vein.
The classic triad of symptoms are:
- gastric varices
- normal liver function tests
- splenomegaly
This condition is usually caused by pathology originating from the pancreas, as the splenic vein runs along the posterior margin of the pancreas on its way to the portal vein. Pancreatic carcinoma (commonly an Islet Cell Tumour or ICT) is a common cause of this uncommon condition.
Treatment is usually surgical with splenectomy a common recourse. Any tumour found is removed, of course.
