The St. Louis Browns baseball team was the notoriously inept American League counterpart to the vastly more successful and popular St. Louis Cardinals from 1902 until 1954, when they moved to Baltimore and became the Orioles. The Browns' lone pennant came in 1944 at the height of World War II, when most of the stars on the other teams were fighting overseas.
It is telling about the Browns' complete lack of talent or success that the most famous moment in Browns history came on August 15, 1951 when owner Bill Veeck sent midget Eddie Gaedel up to pinch hit. The second most famous Brown is Pete Gray, the first one-armed man to play Major League Baseball (in 1945). The Browns played in Sportsman's Park.
