Sulfamethoxazole is one of the combination of two antibiotics (the other being trimethoprim) that make up the commercial medicines Septra, Bactrim, or Cotrim, among others. Commonly prescribed for urinary tract infections and other bacterial infections, this is considered the first (least potent) attack against bacterial infections of the urinary tract. This antibiotic is a sulfanomide, or a sulfa drug.
