Named after an english chess player, Howard Staunton, who played the opening a lot in the 19th century. here is the chess notation

1. c4

The three main replies are 1...e5, 1...c5, and 1...Nf6. The English is intresting opening that can go many ways but many times it turns into a Queens Gambit type postion. If there is no conflict in the center the game becomes very closed, however most of the time white continues with d4 and there are quick exchanges. The english is a good opening if you want to eventually go into a d4 opening. It throws your opponent off and make him/her lose clock time as well it helps if you want to avoid classic replys to a queens pawn opening.
