Turbidites are
deposits which result from
turbidity currents.
These currents, which are also called density currents, are tongue-like masses of debris-laden water that flow downslope beneath clearer water because of their greater density. The currents are capable of transporting large rock fragments because of their high viscosity.
When the transported material is deposited, graded bedding commonly results. Successive density currents may pass over the previous beds without seriously disturbing the relatively fine upper surface of the previous layer. This gives rise to sandstones and other sedimentary formations which display turbulent granular patterns, hence the name turbidites.
