"I am not what I am", a quote spoken by Iago in Shakespeare's play: "Othello". This is one of those quotes that represents human nature, for it is one of the characteristics of Shakespeare's plays. The characters each present some part of human nature, and this quote to me represents, the fact that everybody in the world hides their true selves, true feelings beneath a mask. Just as Iago hid his true evil self beneath a trusting, honest, face that everybody believes in. Each person hides themself either in a mask to which pleases other people, or beneath a mask that makes them different. To hide their unhappiness, and to hide their vulnerability. People hide themselves beneath these masks often because they are afraid that they will not be liked, and therefore will eventually end up alone. The fear of loneliness, one of the great motivations for many things. Low self-esteem causing these fears and doubts of not being liked, or not being able to please the greater public. But does everyone truly know who they are? As in "Othello", does Iago really and truly know what He is, or does he only know what he wants?
