As a
British guy who lived in
Utah for a while, I would say that the closest
American equivalent is "
Jerk". It can be used either offensively or inoffensively.
Examples:
"You git! You spilled my pint!"
"You are a selfish, two-timing heartless git and I never want to see you again."
