The Bench is perhaps the first
open-source comic. Users can download the "source", the image of a boy and a
squirrel sitting on a bench, and add more or less funny comments to it. Of course, they can also develop completely unique variations of the main theme or do
something completely different. By July 2000, there were around 2500 user-contributed comics on the site. Pretty
impressive.
